Anthony H. Cincotta, PhD is President and Chief Scientific Officer of VeroScience, LLC, a privately held biotechnology company based in Tiverton, RI. VeroScience is committed to developing novel, practical, and effective therapies for chronic debilitating human diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disease, and cancer through interdisciplinary basic research focussed on circadian neuroendocrine regulatory pathways controlling organismal level physiology. Dr. Cincotta received his PhD in physiology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. He is the author of scores of peer reviewed research articles on the subject of circadian neuroendocrine regulation of physiology, particularly metabolism, has several issued patents in this field and has spoken at scientific meetings on the subject at the national and international level.
Most recently, after almost 30 years of work in the in the area of circadian neuroendocrine regulation of insulin resistance, Dr. Cincotta’s efforts, along with those of many collaborators, resulted in the FDA approval for Cycloset, a first-in-class dopamine agonist, for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Cycloset is the first drug to win such approval under the new FDA guidelines that require better evidence that diabetes treatments are heart-safe. In a yearlong safety study involving 3,000 subjects with type 2 diabetes, those given Cycloset demonstrated a 42 percent relative risk reduction in a pre-specified composite cardiovascular endpoint compared to placebo, demonstrating the cardiovascular safety of this novel anti-diabetes therapy.
