Biography: Mary McGowan, MD

andersonMary McGowan received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and completed a fellowship at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Her fellowship focused on clinical and research aspects of lipid metabolism.

Dr. McGowan is currently the Medical Director of the Cholesterol Treatment Center at Concord Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Dr. McGowan is President of the Northeast Cholesterol Foundation. She served on both the NH Expert Panel on Pediatric Obesity and the State of New Hampshire commission for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity. The commission was asked to advise the state legislature on policy strategies aimed at the prevention of pediatric obesity in the state of New Hampshire. Dr. McGowan also serves on the board of directors of the National Lipid Association and Northeast Lipid Association.

Dr. McGowan and her partners have completed over 50 clinical trials studying lipid altering medications and has authored articles in journals such as Circulation, Chest, The Journal of Adolescent Medicine, Menopausal Medicine and Patient Care. Her research/clinical interests include familial hypercholesterolemia, pediatric obesity and cardiac disease in women. Dr. McGowan has written three books on cardiac disease. Including “Heart Fitness for Life,” “The Hypertension Source Book,” and “Fifty Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol". Her most recent book (2009) is a coming-of-age novel title “Emily Klein’s Diary.”

Dr. McGowan lives with her family in Bedford, NH. She and her husband, Dr. Thomas Synan have three children; Patrick, Liam, and Sheila and an adorable Havanese dog named Misty. Dr. McGowan is active in a local running group and enjoys skiing, reading, and gardening.
